M3’s new series Younger premieres tomorrow night at 8E/5P and features a stand out cast of Sutton Foster, Debi Mazer and Hilary Duff. Foster plays a single 40-something mother who decides to pose as a 26 year-old in order to re-enter competitive world of publishing in New York City.
Based on the Pamela Redmond Satran novel, Younger is executive produced and directed by Darren Star, the mastermind behind Sex and the City.
Both shows are set in New York, feature strong female leads, and swoon-worthy outfits. But what are some other lessons that Younger can learn from Sex and the City?
1. Relatable Story Lines
Although most of us probably won’t be able to relate to lead character Liza and her mission to erase her online footprint and pose as a 26 year-old publishing assistant, we can relate to the struggle to find a job, find your identity, get through a nasty break up, and navigate dating in 2015. One of SATC’s greatest achievements was its ability to create relatable storylines even in situations that may look foreign at first glance.
2. Strong Examples of Friendship
Sex and the City was much more about friendship than it was about sex. Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha were shining examples of what it looks like to be a supportive and loyal friend, from helping one another get through everything from marriages ending to cancer. Friendships with exes, bosses, former enemies and current frenemies were also explored on the show, giving viewers ample opportunity to see their own stories on screen.
3. Fun With Fashion
SATC fashion visionary Patricia Fields has been tapped as a costume consultant on Younger, so you know the new series will now be your go-to for fashion inspiration. The SATC women were all about being fabulous and fashionable on very good salaries. We’re excited to see Fields create looks for the character Liza, a woman trying to look 15 years younger in a society when everyone is trying to look 15 years older.
4. Envelope Pushing
From sex to sexuality to unwanted pregnancies, there weren’t many stones left unturned by Sex and the City. Since it went off the air in the early 2000s, the digital age has changed the way we interact with others, a new era that should give Younger plenty of avenues to explore.
5. Be Itself
Much of the hype around Younger has understandably been about it’s connection to SATC. While many fans of the HBO series will tune into Younger in hopes that it has the same magic as Sex, it’s important that the new show differentiates itself and finds it’s own niche storytelling style.
Don’t miss the season premiere of Younger on Tuesday, April 7 at 8E/5P on M3.
