Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Your Type’ Video Is A Cinderella Story For The Streets

Your Type M3

The one-hit wonder label has always been a tricky concept in art. Sometimes it’s simply the result of an artist without much talent getting a lucky break. Other times it means the world only gets a small taste of a brilliant body of work. In the case of Carly Rae Jepsen, the fight to reveal more of the brilliance seems to be working.

After the overwhelming success of Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 hit Call Me Maybe, the Canadian singer continued to promote her highly underrated album Kiss, releasing the singles This Kiss, Good Time and Tonight I’m Getting Over You. Failing to impress on the charts, Jepsen took some time away from the pop world and tried a new venture - Broadway.

In the beginning of 2014, Jepsen kicked off a 12-week run in the title role of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella opposite Fran Drescher. Taking the time to regroup and refocus on her music career, Jepsen continued writing and in March of this year debuted I Really Like You as the lead single off her third studio album EMOTION.

Releasing one of the strongest albums of the year, Jepsen continued her return to the music world with Run Away With Me and now with her latest single, Your Type.

Dropping the video early this morning, Jepsen plays a struggling hotel worker who spends her nights singing in a run down club full of a wide away of questionable locals.

Once on stage, Jepsen is able to transform herself into a Cinderella-type character, complete with shiny new shoes. Dancing fans act as her Prince Charming, with music and not a man as her saviour. The video ends with Jepsen returning to the streets, but a quick shot of her Cinderella shoes act as a wink, giving hope that what Jepsen’s character imagines may hopefully become reality.

Your Type was an early favourite of ours with the release of EMOTION, which is saying a lot for an album jam packed of pure pop brilliance. The new video was shot by Gia Coppola and Jepsen’s boyfriend David Kalani Larkins, who also filmed the travel-themed Run Away With Me.

Jepsen is set to head out on tour across Canada with fellow Vancouver natives Hedley in 2016.
