Monday was night one of the Season 19 Dancing With The Stars finale and I was nervous as a mother watching their three year-old in their first ballet recital. But it’s on national TV. The couples must repeat a dance the judges pick and show that they’ve improved. Then it’s time for the freestyle, which as the pro’s keep reminding us is the most important dance of the year.
Only three couples are making it to tonight’s final finale episode. Again, that’s the finale final, or final finale, whichever you prefer.
Check out what happened on last night’s Dancing With The Stars and watch the conclusion to the two-night Season 19 finale tonight at 8E/5P exclusively on M3.
Bethany and Derek
Bethany and Derek repeated their Week One Jive and it was not nearly as strong as the first time they did it. The set didn’t move out of the way properly and it messed up their timing in the beginning, but past the half way mark Bethany seemed to forget her footwork. The judges gave nothing but praise, which may be a finale move.
Scores: 9, 9, 9, 9
Bethany and Derek’s fierce freestyle to Revolution was powerful, impressive and pretty minimalistic for Derek, but had just enough of his signature lifts and holds to be incredibly moving. It was Rhythm Nature meets Hunger Games meets Divergent meets West Side Story. I just drew a picture with words, right?
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10
Sadie and Mark
Len wanted to see Mark and Sadie’s Duck Dynasty’s Samba because he was away that week and I think because he wanted to dance in rehearsal with Mark and embarrass him as much as possible. Apparently One Direction’s Liam Payne wanted to see the dance as well and showed up during rehearsals. He’s a Duck Dynasty fan. Really? Erin Andrews later asked Sadie if she had the new One Direction album and she didn’t. What a waste of a cameo on a non-fan. Again, the dance didn’t go as smoothly as the first time, but it was pretty close. My favourite part of the routine was seeing Sadie’s bearded father cry.
Scores: 10, 9, 10, 9
Mark had the idea for the couple to perform as Mario and Princess Peach to the Mario theme song. I mean, fun concept, but it was possibly a little bit too out there. This would have been really fun and cute in Week 3, but I don’t really feel like it was a finale performance. At the same time, because the performance is a freestyle we really don’t know what the judges are grading on, so I guess this is the time to go for broke.
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10
Janel and Val
Janel spent three days filming Pretty Little Liars last week (Mona flashbacks???) and injured her rib during MOnday morning’s run through. So yeah, she’s probably freaking out a bit. They pulled through for the samba and even improved on what was already a great routine.
Scores: 9, 10, 9, 9
Unlike the other couples, Val and Janel have gone with a less is more approach and created a routine that’s just the two of them. Their slowed-down contemporary piece to a very surprising Pretenders covers was soft and beautiful and included a kiss that made me emit a really embarrassing giggle.
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10
Alfonso and Witney
Alfonso and Witney redid their Week 1 Jive and Alfonso may be an injured man, but he didn’t dance like one. The performance was incredible and not to be dramatic, but I will lose my mind if he doesn’t win. Julianne finally admitted that the couple deserved a perfect 10 the first week, but they wanted to push Alfonso to grow. Oh, and Will Smith sent a Facebook message that showed he’s still alive.
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10
Alfonso and Witney combined a little bit from each week in their freestyle and even featured a tap solo from Alfonso. He is easily one of the most natural entertainers to have ever competed on the show and regardless of whether he wins (but he better), Alfonso will be the person everyone remembers from this season.
Scores: 10, 10, 10, 10
In the most tense elimination of the season, we said a somewhat surprising goodbye to Bethany Mota and five-time Mirror Ball champ Derek Hough. I expected the eliminated couple to be Sadie and Mark, arguably the weakest couple or Janel Parrish, who I think is incredibly strong but not as popular. Sad to see Bethany go, but I’m relieved and excited that Janel and Alfonso will be in the finale. Phew, this show is stressful.
