With exactly one week left before the release of This Is What The Truth Feels Like, her first album since 2006’s The Sweet Escape, Gwen Stefani has gifted fans who have been patiently waiting for the singer’s return with a third single.
Following the painfully poignant I Used To Love You and the lighthearted pop bop Make Me Like You, Stefani’s new song Misery follows the latter.
Contrary to its dark name, Stefani’s new single, which just dropped a lyric video of doodles drawn by the multi-talented artist herself, once again focuses not on the Stefani who recently ended her 13-year marriage to husband Gavin Rossdale, but the one who has found new love with fellow Voice coach Blake Shelton.
Stefani’s greatest gift as a songwriter has always been her ability to be transparent in her lyrics and with Misery, Stefani proves you don’t have to be in pain to write great songs. Singing “I’m doing my best to be sensible, I’m trying not to care but you’re like drugs, you’re like drugs to me, I’m so into you totally,” the former No Doubt front woman proves she hasn’t missed a beat, literally, in her twenty-plus career.
Few artists give us painfully cathartic songs likes Stefani, but we’ll always have Don’t Speak. We’re excited for the new era of happy-Gwen.
Gwen Stefani’s This Is What The Truth Feels Like is set to be released on March 18.
