We were ecstatic to see the return of Marianas Trench earlier this week with the lyric video for their new song, Pop 101, and now we are even more excited to share with you their music video for the song!
As with the song, the video gives us a lesson in pop music and what goes into a hit song. Referencing artists such as Black Eyed Peas and Mumford & Sons, the video also parodies a bunch of music video staples such as the hoppin’ house party, haystacks and suspenders, naked women and, yes, even twerking.
It’s a pretty spot-on observation of clichés in pop music and who better to hear it from than from lead singer Josh Ramsay who co-wrote and produced one of the biggest pop hits in recent history, Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe. The man knows pop music. Pop 101 is a super sharp and witty video, marking the much-needed return of one of our fave Canadian bands.
