Sia’s seventh studio album This Is Acting was released at the end of January and featured the cutting room floor contents of songs written for some of today’s biggest pop stars.
Adele, Katy Perry and Beyonce are artists who songs initially intended for them now appear on the new album, as well as Rihanna’s Cheap Thrills.
Sia told Rolling Stone Magazine that Cheap Thrills was written in response to Rihanna’s manager requesting another single like Diamonds, which was also penned by Sia. In the end, Sia realized the song was possibly more Brit-pop sounding than Rihanna’s usual sound and the Barbados native passed.
Thankfully, Sia liked it enough to release the track on her own. “For some reason, I really liked listening to it which makes me feel masturbatory, but I wouldn’t normally be just jamming out to my own tunes,” said Sia. “There’s something really uplifting about it that put me in a good mood, and I would just pretend it wasn’t me singing. It felt very summer and fun, and I was like, ‘I’ll put that on there.’”
The third single from This Is Acting now has a brand new music video and features a familiar face. Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, who famously appeared in Sia’s videos for Chandelier, Elastic Heart and and Big Girls Cry from 2014’s 1000 Forms Of Fear is back again to star in the new video for Cheap Thrills.
Along with two male dancers, Ziegler performs in her trademark nude unitard and Sia wig, with the singer surprisingly appearing in the background of the new video. At least we think it’s Sia.
Sia co-directed Cheap Thrills with her frequent collaborator Daniel Askill, with choreography from Ryan Heffington. The Australian singer is set to perform Cheap Thrills from This Is Acting on the final season of American Idol this Thursday.
