The MMVAs and other huge events that happened in 1990

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the MMVAs. I know, I know, we’re totally hitting our prime years. Why thank you, we think we look pretty good for our age too!

The first MMVAs took place all across Canada, with some of the nations biggest stars, including Maestro Fresh Wes and Blue Rodeo, performing at train stations stretch from coast to coast. 1990 was a big year for Much, but what else was going on in the world then?

The MMVAs launch in 1990, when…

The first episode of The Simpsons aired.

Home Alone, Pretty Woman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Total Recall, Die Hard 2, Dick Tracy and Edward Scissorhands were big at the box office.

The world was introduced to Vanilla Ice’s breakout hit Ice Ice Baby (see above Ninja Turtles note).

Nelson Mendela was freed after 27 years in a South African prison.

The Tower of Pisa closes due to safety concerns over its lean.

In Living Colour premieres, which features unknown comedian Jim Carrey and fly girl Jennifer Lopez.

Seinfeld debuts, although at the time, the show was called Seinfeld Chronicles.

The Milli Vanilli lip syncing scandal erupts after winning a Grammy for Best New Artist.

Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson, and Jennifer Lawrence were born in 1990.

Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U, Madonna’s Vogue, MC Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This and Roxette’s It Must Have Been Love were four of the biggest songs of the year.

This was the fashion.

Tune in to the MMVAs this Sunday at 9E/6P on Much, CTV and CTV GO.
